What does this mean?  Looking on the positive side:

Risk Management options will be developed and evaluated by an Expert Advisory Group.  So what does this imply? To me it implies that there is enough evidence for a causal relationship to require risk management options and the establishment of an Expert Advisory Group.  It could be looked at as sort of a: "well we can't say there is a causal relationship, but the evidence is increasingly stronger, so we won't necessarily fund research into proving the link but we will start looking at how to cover our butts and help prevent future exposure by studying risk management options."

I'd like to see the "document" and know who the "experts in relevant fields" were that peer reviewed the "document" and finally I would like to see the full report by B. Mihajlovic and others.

Hi David

Thanks for posting this abstract from Health Canada.  What it means is that Health Canada has finally after God knows how many years, decided to make the fact official, that they have decided that Canadian are very possibly at risk from this bacterium.

Now they have to put the Precautionary Approach into action.              The precautionary approach/principle is a distinctive approach to managing threats of serious or irreversible harm where there is scientific uncertainty. It is not new-what is new is the increasing complexity of the science and the public debate about the ability of governments to respond to such situations.

The precautionary approach recognizes that the absence of full scientific certainty shall not be used as a reason to postpone decisions where there is a risk of serious or irreversible harm. Even though scientific information may be inconclusive, decisions have to be made to meet society's expectations that risks be addressed and living standards maintained.

This is the link http://www.ec.gc.ca/econom/pamphlet_e.htm

Now the question is if it took this long to get this far, how long will it take to apply the Precautionary Principle.

Diane

The next step would be to list Mycobacterium Paratubrculosis on the Reportable diseases list, so we would not have this contaminated meat for dinner

Now who knows how long that would take. LOL  Diane

Who knows how long it could take.  Problem is if they ever put Johne's on the reportable disease list the implications could be very practically problematic as far as selling diseased animals to the public.
