Ok, I'm a bit confused after watching the new videos. At one point Prof JHT says UC is not caused by Crohns. Anyone help me out here?

He says Crohn's is result of a MAP infection, and that UC is a different disease caused by something else.  He is not sure what causes UC, but he theorizes it would be viral.

As they are both two different diseases, one may be present while the other is not.  Or, if infected with MAP and the other unknown pathogen, you could have both Crohn's and UC.

UC is something totally different.  He said the small percentage of people with UC that do test positive for MAP, must have both infections at once.

In other words, if you have UC your screwed.

It is emerging that both of these diseases are associated with disabled white cells called neutrophils. These guys are being attacked in two ways. in crohns its a molecule called mannan that is released after the body destroys a MAP cell. In UC an antibody causes the neutrophils to be damaged by our own immune system.

There is a test being developed that works in about half the time it is used. in Crohns, its called a ASCA test and in UC a pANCA.

Crohns shows ASCA+ and pANCA- in 96% of cases.
UC shows ASCA- and pANCA+ in 97% of cases.

The faulty white cells allow bugs to take hold that dont affect people without this problem, and thats why we get IBD.

According to what I have read, its not possible to get both crohns and UC. This shows that MAP could cause UC by an unknown reaction that causes perinuclear antineutrophil cytoplasmic autoantibodies to form (pANCA). Somebody please do some research?
