Professor Collins has just posted two recent lectures he gave to the Ontario Dairy Farmers organization on September 3, 2008.
Both are informative. If you only have time to watch one, watch the one titled Johne’s Disease – Threats and Opportunities. This one focuses more on the zoonotic potential. However, the other lecture is very interesting and provides context for everything.
This 40 minutes lecture is a studio recording of the second lecture given to the Ontario Dairy Farmers organization. It first covers reasons for concern about the zoonotic potential of MAP and then gives the encouraging news that all the necessary tools are available to affordably and effectively control Johne’s disease in dairy herds.

Hi David
Thanks for posting this information. I listened to both and it sounds like it is possibly making progress, but I wonder how it would be possible to completely eradicate Map totally, considering it is just about everywhere. Any comments? Diane |

Yes it does sound like they are making progress and have economical means available to help curb MAP on the farms; less than 10$/cow/year on blood testing as well as free herd management practices can make a very significant difference.
But it is true that it is probably nearly impossible to eradicate completely, and a couple experts i have spoken with echo this sentiment. So i guess we need to really focus on treating MAP infections as well. At the same time though, i personally don't think we should write-off trying to eradicate it on the farms (animal health, human health and trade and economic reasons) even if we can't get it out of the environment altogether; just because a law imperfectly deters does not mean you legalize the object of the law, no?
