A Johnes eradication scheme is ongoing in the Orkney and Shetland islands, UK. the first one I have discovered anywhere!
Orkney is the most densely stocked cattle area in Europe, and the European Union are funding the testing. If cows are found to have johnes, they are planned to be exterminated. A farmer owned company called Hi Health Ltd are doing the testing.
As in Shetland, all suspect animals are to be tested over a 3 year period, as well as on import.
They hope to cover 80% of the herds in a 3 year period starting april 2008. Contrast that with action in the USA where johnes action funding has been cut to one sixth of what it was in 2004.
Is there a johnes eradication scheme in canada? Should there be one?
