If you go to "healingwell.com" to the Crohn's Disease forum you will see that 2 USA Crohnies are currently on the anti-MAP program, being treated via antibiotics.
Is this treatment available in Canada yet?
Why don't Canadian GI's treat CD with antibiotics? The 1st hospital stay my g'son had, he was treated with Cipro and Flaggyl. His condition in Dec was moderate in comparision to what it is today Apr 2009. His large intestine is severely ulcerated, red angry inflammed, bleeding and swollen for at least 20 cm. He is waiting to hear if he is accepted on Humira program. If so, has to wait to see if Med insurance will cover the cost. And, after that, if successful, it will take Humira about 3 months to kick in and start helping him ..... if he isn't allergic to it also! A scarey situation for a 19 year old!

Waiting to be accepted on Humira program then to see if Med Ins. will cover cost. |

The treatment is available if one can get a doctor to prescribe; all the drugs (except clofazimine) are common antibiotics, and clofazimine/lamprene is available for free through Health Canada's Special Access program, which one's doctor will have to petition.
GI doctors will prescribe Cipro and Flagyl simply because they have arbitrarily been prescribed before; commonly used now after surgeries, etc.
Who knows why GIs won't prescribe; it cannot be because of side effects when one considers the side effects of the stuff they happily prescribe now. Especially frustrating when one considers that they'd sooner send you to the surgeon than have you try some antibiotics. |

Dear Worrywart
So sorry I haven't answered your post, but I have been so busy lately, that I bearly have anytime for me at all. Thank God, David Crichton has been keeping me up todate.
There was a study done at the Montreal General Hospital using the Map cocktail of antibiotics.
You can contact Dr. Marcel Behr, he is the Chief of the Infectious Diseases Department at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Montreal. He works with Dr. Alain Biton, Chief of Gastroenterology. You can give him my name, Diane Fagen, and tell him that I sent you. He has in the past prescribed the Map antibiotic treatment. Good Luck, Diane
